Human Pictures - About Us

Injustice and oppression are based on socio-economic, political, and environmental exclusions and inequalities throughout our society. Often times however, it is difficult to discover approaches for the more privileged to understand and relate to the exclusions and inequalities faced by those who are marginalized. It is our job as creative media makers to find ways that effectively translate these issues and push people to want to understand and challenge the factors at the root of injustice. In a global world we are all connected. We are dedicated to revealing those connections through the creation of dynamic media that emboldens social movements with the fodder to challenge injustice.

To a great extent that means not being afraid to take sides. From the get-go Human Pictures has been committed to work exclusively on projects that contributed to the struggle for justice and social change, striving always to create truly complex work; and embracing complexity above notions of objectivity and neutrality. We stress creativity, beauty, and quality in everything we do, while simultaneously ensuring that our projects have a clear purpose; we want our creativity to translate in some way into a direct contribution toward tipping the balance in favor of the least favored.

Through social documentaries, narrative films, and advocacy films, Human Pictures seeks to move beyond the role of a production company and establishes itself as a multimedia movement for social transformation.

I consider myself an engineer at my core. Discovering how things work has always fascinated me. After my engineering studies I realized that understanding the way things function wasn’t enough, methodology without purpose seemed empty. I needed to apply my knowledge and curiosity to something worthy of exploration, what better focus than humans.

Through the work we do, I’m constantly trying to figure out better ways to do what we do. Whether it’s analyzing a project that needs re-structuring, or developing a more efficient workflow.

I now feel that I do not only understand how the wheel spins; I’m actually spinning it with a direction, with a purpose that will help people in the end. I believe I’ve filled the void.

Uniting a group of people willing to create a voice against the abuse of humanity has been my dream since I was 15. From then to now I’ve been studying and working, polishing my skills and broadening my horizons, all in an effort to make this idea something tangible and effective.

I’ve worked in films, documentaries and basically anything and everything under the sun. I’ve learned to become resourceful and to have technology always in reach to aid me in completing every project to the highest possible degree. Each experience has given me something that is now being used to fuel this voice, to make it louder, to bring more people together.

I am an activist, researcher, and filmmaker, with a long-term political commitment with communities who have experienced massive cultural or territorial disruption, and who find themselves under or misrepresented by the dominant media. I have worked for years as a documentarian all over Latin America with a firm belief that there is no inherent contradiction between active political commitment and artistic pursuit; to the contrary, these can converge, complement and fortify each other.

As a member of Human Pictures I share the belief that through complex, powerful storytelling we can contribute to the struggle for social justice and trasformation.

My passion for social justice has existed for as long as I can remember. In my pursuit to fuel collective transformation, I’ve worked closely with some of the most socio-economically marginalized and politically disenfranchised populations, studied extensively under progressive academics, and lived in 3 continents; yet so many root causes of global oppression remained illusive or masked by the distortion of mainstream media. It wasn’t until I defended human rights on the ground in solidarity with communities non-violently resisting the Colombian armed conflict, that the forces and conditions driving injustice truly became clear.

I didn’t look for film, it found me – through all the poignant images of people burned into my mind and all the difficult stories they shared that kept me up at night – I was driven to document their compelling and urgent struggles. It’s much easier to forget a person whose nothing more than a statistic, to be indifferent toward someone struggling when we don’t identify with them or more tragically to define someone as an enemy when we don’t understand what motivates their actions. I firmly believe the power of documentary film is grounded in its capacity to help us bear witness to someone else’s journey, to demystify their actions, to be struck by their deep emotions, and in doing so, help us connect and inspire us to take action that will change our world.

Empiric, innate photographer, almost half of my life I have been looking for unique images. I have been a documentary field reporter for over a decade now, which has allowed me to interact with and learn from disadvantaged populations. I have observed their situation, and their ways of life. This work has given me a different way to see the world, and a way to give meaning to what my camera captures.

Traveling through remote communities in moorlands, deserts, mountains, glaciers, forests and beaches I have witnessed incredible moments, and while hypnotized by them, I feel the desire to capture these in a still image. These unique moments urge me to share what I see and feel with the world.
