On October 14, 2014, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of men incarcerated at St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville, Alabama. The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADC) failed to respond to dangerous conditions and an extraordinarily high rate of violence at St. Clair.

In October 2017, EJI reached a final settlement with the Alabama Department of Corrections that included implementing new systems for prison management and structural reforms.
